You Only Live…Twice

You have one life, but two choices: Live a life that is you (the real you) or live a life that you think “others” want you to live.

I recently read an article about the Top 5 Things That People Regret the Most on Their Deathbed that completely surprised me.

There was no mention of climbing Mt. Everest, living in a tropical island, or playing more rounds of golf.

Regret #1 – I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of spending an entire life trying to be someone else that is not you. Get to know yourself and embrace and love who you are. That’s your purpose.

Regret #2 – I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.

It’s easy to get caught up in doing and forget WHY you are doing what you do. Find meaning and purpose in your work and be cautious that it doesn’t take away or sacrifice WHY you are doing it.

Regret #3 – I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.

It’s never too late to say – “I love you.”

Regret #4 – I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Humans need connection and good friends fill and find ways to add value. When things get tough, it’s easy to shut them out or discount relationships as not important when in fact they are very important.

Regret #5 – I wish I had let myself be happier.

This one really rang true with me. Why is it that we punish ourselves for not being “better” when in fact, we are already special and good? Acknowledging your hard work and feeling proud and happy for what you have is a gift.

You can live once and have regrets or you can learn from others and live YOUR life, one that is your true, real self.

Go out and be YOU.
